Background:

  • Omphalotus illudens is a mushroom species known for producing bioactive compounds.
  • Sesquiterpenes are a class of terpenes derived from six isoprene units.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To isolate and characterize novel sesquiterpenes from Omphalotus illudens.
  • To elucidate the chemical structures of isolated compounds using spectroscopic and crystallographic techniques.

Main Methods:

  • Liquid culture extraction of Omphalotus illudens.
  • Isolation of compounds using chromatographic techniques.
  • Structure elucidation via Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, Mass Spectrometry (MS), and X-ray crystallography.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Three sesquiterpenes were successfully isolated: illudosone hemiacetal (1a), isoomphadione (2), and illudiolone (3).
  • The complete structures of these compounds were determined through comprehensive spectroscopic analysis.
  • X-ray crystallographic analysis confirmed the proposed structures of the isolated sesquiterpenes.

Conclusions:

  • The study successfully identified and characterized three distinct sesquiterpenes from Omphalotus illudens.
  • The findings contribute to the understanding of the chemical diversity of fungal secondary metabolites.
  • This research provides valuable structural information on illudosone hemiacetal, isoomphadione, and illudiolone.
