Information-guided stereotaxis enhances neurosurgery with real-time data visualization. This advanced navigation system achieved a 90.3% average resection rate for malignant gliomas in open MRI surgeries.

Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Medical Imaging
  • Computer-Aided Surgery

Background:

  • Information-guided stereotaxis represents a significant advancement in neurosurgical procedures.
  • Visualization of medical information is crucial for next-generation neurosurgical systems.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of information-guided stereotaxis in open MRI surgeries.
  • To describe the development and application of various navigation techniques within a novel system.

Main Methods:

  • Performed 76 open MRI surgeries between March 2000 and April 2001.
  • Utilized pre- and post-operative MR images for 21 malignant glioma cases.
  • Developed and described real-time updated navigation, augmented reality, 3D, chemical, and information-guided navigation (HivisCAS).

Main Results:

  • Achieved an average resection rate of 90.3% for malignant gliomas.
  • Demonstrated resection rates ranging from a minimum of 55% to a maximum of 100%.
  • Successfully integrated multiple navigation modalities in open MRI-guided surgery.

Conclusions:

  • Information-guided stereotaxis, integrated with open MRI, significantly improves tumor resection rates.
  • The developed HivisCAS system shows promise for enhancing precision and outcomes in neurosurgery.
