Background:

  • Idiopathic macular holes (IMHs) are a significant cause of vision loss.
  • Understanding factors influencing IMH onset and surgical outcomes is crucial for patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the correlation between age of onset, myopic refraction, and axial length in patients with IMH.
  • To evaluate the relationship between macular hole size, surgical outcomes, and axial length.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study included 94 eyes of 91 patients with stage III and IV IMH.
  • Standardized surgical protocol involved vitrectomy and gas tamponade.
  • Confocal laser scanning tomography assessed macular hole dimensions.

  • Age at onset significantly correlated with myopic refraction and axial length (p <0.0001).
