    Summary

    Cortical spreading depression (CSD) in rats induced a taste aversion to sucrose solutions. This aversion was concentration-dependent and occurred even when the cortex was not essential for learning.

    Background:

    • Water deprivation is a common method to motivate learning in animal studies.
    • Cortical spreading depression (CSD) is a wave of neural excitation followed by inhibition.
    • Previous research suggests CSD may have amnesic properties.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the aversive and amnesic properties of cortical spreading depression (CSD).
    • To determine if CSD affects taste aversion learning.
    • To explore the role of cortical concentration and laterality in CSD-induced effects.

    • Male albino rats were subjected to a 24-hour water deprivation schedule.
