Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Gallbladder cancer frequently presents at advanced stages, with liver and lymph node metastases being common.
  • Metastasis to distant organs is characteristic of advanced gallbladder cancer.
  • Oral soft tissue metastasis is an exceptionally rare manifestation of any malignancy.

Observation:

  • A 62-year-old woman presented with abdominal pain, later diagnosed with advanced gallbladder cancer.
  • During surgery for suspected gallstones, liver metastases were identified.
  • Postoperative staging revealed lung and bone metastases, alongside a novel gingival tumor.

Findings:

  • Histopathological analysis confirmed the gingival tumor as a metastasis from the primary gallbladder cancer.

  • This represents the first reported case of gallbladder cancer metastasizing to the oral soft tissue.
  • The patient had a poor response to chemotherapy, succumbing to the disease within five months.
  • Implications:

    • This case highlights the potential for unusual metastatic patterns in advanced gallbladder cancer.
    • It underscores the importance of thorough physical examination, including the oral cavity, in patients with advanced cancers.
    • Further research may be warranted to understand the mechanisms behind rare metastatic sites in gallbladder cancer.
