Problem-based learning (PBL) helps medical students adapt learning issues. This study found a very small shift from basic science to medical decision-making topics as clinical experience grows.

Medical Education with 3-Year Regional Campuses: Do They Attract a Different Type of Applicant?

  • To assess if learning issue types in standardized PBL cases change with clinical experience.
  • Focus on the 3rd year of medical school.

  • Learning issues from 3rd-year family medicine clerkships were collected.
  • Three reviewers categorized issues into broad areas by consensus.
  • Categorized issues were compared over the academic year.

Main Results:

  • The distribution of learning issues remained largely consistent throughout the year.
