[Stroma formation in epithelial malignant tumors].

A A Nikolaev, A S Iagubov

    Summary

Tumor growth involves epithelial cells stimulating fibroblasts to form and remodel the tumor stroma. These fibroblasts produce stromal components and can also break down collagen, maintaining tissue balance.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Cell Biology
    • Histology

    Context:

    • Investigated stroma-formation and rearrangement in 221 cases of lung, stomach, and mammary gland cancers.
    • Employed histological, histochemical, and electron microscopy techniques.

    Purpose:

    • To elucidate the mechanisms underlying tumor stroma formation and its dynamic rearrangement.
    • To understand the role of fibroblasts in tumor microenvironment development.

    Summary:

    • Multiplying tumor epithelial cells induce proliferation and activation of histiogenic and vascular fibroblasts.
    • Activated fibroblasts exhibit a dual role: synthesizing stromal fibers and interstitial matter, or participating in collagen degradation.
    • Tumor stroma formation processes align with normal fibrillogenesis and interstitial tissue remodeling.
    • Tumor fibroblasts demonstrate the capacity for phagocytosis of mature collagen.
    • Epithelium plays a leading role in maintaining the parenchyma-stroma correlation during tumor growth.

    Impact:

    • Provides insights into the dynamic interplay between tumor cells and their surrounding stroma.
    • Enhances understanding of the cellular mechanisms driving tumor microenvironment development.
    • Contributes to the knowledge base for potential therapeutic strategies targeting tumor stroma.
