Occupational driving does not cause lumbar disc degeneration, according to a twin study. While driving may worsen back pain symptoms, it does not lead to structural disc damage.
Area of Science:
- Occupational health
- Musculoskeletal research
- Twin studies
Background:
- Occupational drivers report higher rates of back problems.
- Whole-body vibration from vehicles is hypothesized to accelerate disc degeneration.
- The study investigates the impact of lifetime driving exposure on lumbar disc health.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine if lifetime occupational driving exposure leads to lumbar disc degeneration.
- To differentiate between symptoms and structural damage in the lumbar discs of drivers.
Main Methods:
- Assessed 45 male monozygotic twin pairs with differing occupational driving histories.
- Collected data on driving exposure and confounding factors via structured interviews.
- Evaluated lumbar disc degeneration using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Main Results:
- No significant difference in lumbar disc degeneration was found between occupational drivers and their non-driver twin brothers.
- No overall tendency for increased disc degeneration or pathology was identified in occupational drivers.
Conclusions:
- Driving exposure does not appear to cause structural damage to lumbar discs.
- Findings suggest that while driving may exacerbate back pain, it does not lead to disc damage.
- This should be reassuring for individuals in occupations involving vehicle operation.
