Summary

Osteoid osteoma (OO) is a benign bone tumor. This case highlights a rare mandibular OO in a young female, diagnosed using CT and bone scintigraphy after prolonged pain.

Background:

Osteoid osteoma (OO) is a benign bone-forming tumor, typically affecting long bones.
Mandibular osteoid osteomas are exceptionally rare, presenting diagnostic challenges due to nonspecific symptoms and radiographic findings.

Observation:

A 26-year-old female presented with a 3-year history of intermittent mandibular pain.
Initial panoramic radiography revealed diffuse sclerosis and an ill-defined radiopacity in the molar region.
Computed tomography (CT) identified a 10 mm osseous lesion in the mandibular cortical bone.

Findings:

Bone scintigraphy demonstrated increased uptake of 99mTc HMDP at the lesion site.
Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of osteoid osteoma.

CT findings were crucial in differentiating the lesion from other bone-forming tumors.

Implications:

This case underscores the importance of advanced imaging, particularly CT, for diagnosing rare mandibular osteoid osteomas.
CT is the imaging modality of choice when conventional radiography is inconclusive and pain is the primary symptom.
Accurate diagnosis through detailed radiological assessment is vital for appropriate management and differentiation from other pathologies.
