Interdigitating dendritic cell tumor is a rare lymph node neoplasm. This case report details a Saudi female patient

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology
  • Immunohistochemistry

Background:

  • Interdigitating dendritic cell tumor (IDCT) is an exceptionally rare neoplasm primarily affecting lymph nodes.
  • It originates from interdigitating dendritic cells, a subset of antigen-presenting cells found in T-cell zones of lymphoid tissue.

Observation:

  • A case report of a 30-year-old Saudi female presenting with a painless, unilateral left neck mass.
  • Histopathological examination of the affected lymph node revealed whorls and fascicles of spindle cells interspersed with small lymphocytes.

Findings:

  • Neoplastic cells exhibited strong, diffuse positivity for S-100 protein, vimentin, and alpha 1-antichemotrypsin.
  • Focal positivity for the macrophage marker CD68 was also noted.
  • Combined morphological and immunohistochemical findings confirmed the diagnosis of interdigitating dendritic cell tumor.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case contributes to the understanding of interdigitating dendritic cell tumor presentation and diagnosis.
  • Highlights the importance of immunohistochemistry in differentiating rare neoplasms.
  • Adds to the limited literature on IDCT in Saudi Arabia and the broader Middle East region.
