Area of Science:

  • Endocrine Surgery
  • Minimally Invasive Surgical Techniques

Background:

  • Minimal access thyroid surgery (MATS) encompasses various techniques.
  • This study investigated the feasibility of MATS via lateral 'focused' or endoscopic approaches.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility of minimal access thyroid surgery (MATS).
  • To assess MATS using lateral 'focused' or endoscopic methods.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 26 patients undergoing concomitant thyroid procedures during minimally invasive parathyroidectomy (MIP).
  • Procedures performed via a 2-cm lateral cervical incision (n=19) or endoscopically (n=7).

Main Results:

  • 26 patients underwent thyroid surgery (25 local excision, 1 hemi-thyroidectomy) for benign nodular thyroid disease.

Related Experiment Videos

  • No permanent complications occurred; two patients required hematoma drainage.
  • Conclusions:

    • Thyroid surgery can be safely performed using minimally invasive techniques.
    • MATS is a feasible option for select patients.
    • The efficacy of MATS for nodular thyroid disease requires further investigation.
