Feedback effects on spatial egocentrism in old age.

N R Schultz, W J Hoyer

    Journal of Gerontology
    |January 11, 1976

    Summary

Perspective-taking feedback can improve spatial egocentrism in older adults. This cognitive training enhances specific skills but does not broadly generalize to other cognitive abilities in aging.

    Area of Science:

    • Cognitive Psychology
    • Gerontology

    Background:

    • Advanced age is often associated with a decline in the ability to decenter.
    • Egocentrism, the inability to differentiate between one's own perspective and that of others, may increase with age.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate if perspective-taking feedback and practice can reduce egocentric performance in elderly individuals.
    • To examine the effects of cognitive training on spatial egocentrism and related cognitive abilities in older adults.

    Main Methods:

    • Elderly participants (N=36) were assigned to feedback, practice, or control groups.
    • Post-testing included measures of spatial egocentrism, fluid intelligence, perceptual speed, and volume conservation, assessed immediately and two weeks after training.

    Main Results:

    • Perspective-taking feedback significantly improved scores on the spatial egocentrism task.
    • The positive effects of feedback did not generalize to other cognitive measures such as fluid intelligence or perceptual speed.

    Conclusions:

    • Cognitive training, specifically perspective-taking feedback, can effectively target and improve specific cognitive functions like spatial egocentrism in older adults.
    • Environmental and experiential factors play a crucial role in the acquisition and maintenance of cognitive abilities throughout the aging process.
