Early oral feeding after Caesarean delivery is safe and effective. This approach significantly reduces the time to bowel sounds, oral intake, and hospital stay for patients undergoing Caesarean section under general anaesthesia.
Area of Science:
- Obstetrics and Gynecology
- Surgical Nutrition
- Anesthesiology
Background:
- Post-Caesarean delivery recovery protocols often involve delayed oral feeding.
- General anaesthesia for Caesarean section may influence post-operative gastrointestinal function.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the safety and efficacy of initiating early oral feeding after Caesarean delivery under general anaesthesia.
- To compare early feeding with traditional dietary management in this patient population.
Main Methods:
- A controlled trial involving 182 women undergoing Caesarean section under general anaesthesia.
- Patients were randomized to either early low-residue diet initiation (6 hours post-op) or traditional feeding (upon hearing bowel sounds).
- Evaluation included demographic data, complications, and gastrointestinal symptoms.
Main Results:
- No significant differences in age, gravidity, parity, gestational age, surgery length, or post-operative ileus between groups.
- Early feeding group showed significantly shorter times to bowel sounds, oral intake initiation, and hospital stay.
- Rates of wound infection, blood transfusion, and febrile morbidity were similar in both groups.
Conclusions:
- Early post-operative oral feeding following Caesarean section under general anaesthesia is safe.
- This feeding strategy is well-tolerated and leads to improved recovery times.
- Early feeding can be recommended for women undergoing Caesarean delivery.
