Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Geriatrics
  • Healthcare Epidemiology

Background:

  • Antimicrobial agents are frequently prescribed in long-term-care facilities (LTCFs).
  • Elderly LTCF residents are susceptible to Clostridium difficile colonization and C. difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD).
  • C. difficile is a leading cause of acute diarrheal illness in nursing homes, with recognized outbreaks.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the epidemiology of CDAD in elderly LTCF residents.
  • To describe the clinical features of CDAD in this demographic.
  • To provide evidence-based management recommendations for C. difficile in LTCFs.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of available evidence.
  • Analysis of epidemiological data.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Synthesis of clinical findings.
  • Main Results:

    • CDAD is a significant health concern in LTCF residents.
    • Specific risk factors and clinical presentations are observed in the elderly population.
    • Effective management strategies are crucial to control CDAD.

    Conclusions:

    • Understanding CDAD epidemiology and clinical features is vital for LTCF settings.
    • Evidence-based recommendations can guide the management of C. difficile infections.
    • Targeted interventions are necessary to reduce the burden of CDAD in elderly LTCF residents.
