Area of Science:

  • Reproductive medicine
  • Gynecology
  • Obstetrics

Background:

  • Physicians counseling on preconception health can advise on optimal timing for conception.
  • Current evidence favors prospective fertility window identification over calendar or basal body temperature methods.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate methods for prospectively identifying the fertile window.
  • To determine the effectiveness of these methods in optimizing intercourse timing for conception.

Main Methods:

  • Review of evidence for prospective fertility window identification methods.
  • Comparison of fertility charting (vaginal discharge) and fertility monitors against calendar calculations and basal body temperature.
  • Assessment of urinary luteinizing hormone (LH) kits.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Fertility charting and fertility monitors prospectively identify the fertile window effectively.
  • These methods offer a longer fertile window compared to urinary LH kits.
  • Prospective identification of the full fertile window may increase conception rates.

Conclusions:

  • Prospective fertility window identification is superior to traditional methods for timing intercourse.
  • Early and accurate information on fertility can reduce time to conception and healthcare costs.
