Summary

Background:

Observation:

  • Two cases of young (<1 year) intact male outdoor DSH cats presented with localized tetanus after being missing.
  • Clinical signs included severe thoracic limb muscle spasms, forehead wrinkling, and mild trismus.
  • Routine diagnostics (CBC, spinal radiographs, CSF analysis) were unremarkable.

Findings:

  • Electromyography (EMG) in one cat revealed persistent spontaneous motor unit potentials, confirming tetanus.
  • Treatment involved symptomatic (diazepam, metronidazole) and supportive care (physical therapy, assisted feeding, fluid therapy).
