Liver storage iron in Canadians.

B Shah, B Belonje

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition
    |January 1, 1976
    PubMed
    Summary

Liver iron stores in males increase after adolescence, while females maintain lower levels throughout life. Stillborn infants exhibit high iron storage, and males with cardiovascular disease show lower iron stores than accident victims.

    Area of Science:

    • Toxicology
    • Human Physiology
    • Biochemistry

    Background:

    • Iron is an essential element, but its accumulation can lead to toxicity.
    • Understanding normal iron distribution in human organs is crucial for diagnosing and treating iron overload disorders.
    • Hepatic iron stores are a primary indicator of the body's iron status.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the age- and sex-related patterns of iron storage in human liver tissue.
    • To establish reference ranges for hepatic iron concentration in a Canadian population.
    • To compare iron stores between accident victims and individuals deceased from cardiovascular disease.

    Main Methods:

    • Liver samples were obtained from 105 autopsy cases (78 males, 27 females) in Canada.
    • Iron concentration in liver tissue was quantified.
    • Data were analyzed based on age, sex, and cause of death.

    Main Results:

    • Male hepatic iron stores were high at birth, decreased in infancy, increased in early adulthood, and declined after age 55.
    • Female hepatic iron stores were high at birth, then decreased and remained relatively stable throughout life.
    • Stillborn infants had significantly high liver iron stores (200–1600 µg/g).
    • Males under 45 who died from cardiovascular disease had lower liver iron stores compared to accident victims.

    Conclusions:

    • Hepatic iron storage exhibits distinct age- and sex-dependent dynamics.
    • Cardiovascular disease may be associated with altered iron metabolism.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms behind these observed patterns.
