Summary

This study found no significant differences in platelet serotonin levels, uptake, or MAO-B activity between migraine patients and controls. These findings suggest platelet serotonin parameters may not be reliable indicators of altered serotonin homeostasis in migraine.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate platelet serotonin parameters as potential indicators of altered serotonin homeostasis in migraine.
  • To compare platelet serotonin level (PSL), serotonin uptake (PSU), and monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) activity between migraine patients and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • PSL was measured fluorimetrically.
  • PSU was assessed by incubating platelet-rich plasma with 14C-5-HT.
  • Platelet MAO-B activity was determined using kynuramine as a substrate.
