Area of Science:

  • Nuclear Medicine
  • Medical Imaging Technology

Background:

  • Growing interest in clinical fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) imaging using multi-head gamma cameras.
  • Need for improved sensitivity in gamma camera imaging.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Evaluate initial experiences with a novel triple-head coincidence gamma camera.
  • Assess image quality parameters relevant to positron emission tomography (PET).

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a triple-head coincidence gamma camera with 19 mm sodium iodide crystal thickness.
  • Employed Carlson and line source phantoms for image quality assessment.
  • Acquired clinical brain, heart, and whole-body [18F]FDG studies.

Main Results:

  • Achieved system sensitivity of 830 cps/kBq/ml with 2D axial shields.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Maximum noise equivalent count rate was 1900 cps at 50 MBq of 18F.
  • Imaging resolution measured 7.0 mm axially and 7.6 mm transaxially.
  • Average scatter fraction was 29% in scattered media.
  • Conclusions:

    • The triple-head coincidence gamma camera demonstrates high-count rate capabilities.
    • The system provides good contrast and resolution for clinical imaging.
    • Phantom and clinical results show good correlation, validating system performance.
