Heterotopic ossification, a rare orbital lesion, presents as calcification or ossification on imaging. This case highlights the importance of considering it in orbital lesion differential diagnoses.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Orbital hemangiomas with calcification are documented.
  • No prior reports exist for heterotopic ossification within the orbit.

Observation:

  • A 30-year-old male experienced sudden, painless, progressive proptosis and diplopia in the left eye.
  • Preoperative imaging revealed characteristic radiologic findings of the lesion.

Findings:

  • Complete surgical excision of the orbital lesion was performed.
  • Pathologic examination confirmed heterotopic ossification.
  • Discussion of probable causes and features.

Implications:

  • Heterotopic ossification should be included in the differential diagnosis for orbital lesions with calcification or ossification.
