Background:

Diffuse drusen of Bruch membrane is a condition affecting the retina.
Electro-oculography (EOG) is a functional test of the retinal pigment epithelium.
Fundus flavimaculatus and fundus albipunctatus are related retinal conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the retinal pigment epithelium function in patients with diffuse drusen of Bruch membrane using EOG.
To compare EOG findings in diffuse drusen of Bruch membrane with those in fundus flavimaculatus.
To assess the basis for classifying these conditions as flecked retina syndrome.

Main Methods:

Twelve patients with diffuse drusen of Bruch membrane underwent electro-oculography (EOG).
EOG light-peak/dark-trough ratios were analyzed.

Findings were compared to previously reported EOG results in fundus flavimaculatus.

Main Results:

All patients with diffuse drusen of Bruch membrane exhibited normal EOG light-peak/dark-trough ratios.
This contrasts with abnormal EOG ratios typically found in fundus flavimaculatus.
The results indicate no diffuse functional abnormality of the retinal pigment epithelium in diffuse drusen.

Conclusions:

Diffuse drusen of Bruch membrane does not appear to involve a diffuse functional abnormality of the retinal pigment epithelium.
The classification of diffuse drusen, fundus flavimaculatus, and fundus albipunctatus as flecked retina syndrome should be based on morphological similarities.
Functional testing (EOG) does not support grouping these conditions together.
