    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Neurology

    Background:

    • Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a treatment for severe mental health conditions.
    • Tricyclic antidepressants are a common pharmacological treatment for depression.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of ECT in Denmark.
    • Compare ECT outcomes with tricyclic antidepressants.
    • Assess the feasibility of outpatient ECT.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of 22,210 ECT treatments administered between April 1972 and March 1973.
    • Review of indications, apparatus, and anesthesia techniques.
    • Comparison of remission rates between ECT and tricyclic antidepressants.

    Main Results:

    • ECT showed a higher remission rate (80%) for endogenous depression compared to tricyclic antidepressants (60%).
    • Complications from ECT were few and mild, with one questionable death.
    • Outpatient ECT demonstrated minimal risk and high effectiveness.

    Conclusions:

    • ECT is a safe and effective treatment for various psychiatric conditions, including endogenous depression.
    • Unilateral ECT and outpatient administration are recommended for broader clinical application.
    • ECT offers advantages over tricyclic antidepressants for specific depressive conditions.
