Summary

Young osteocytes activate collagen synthesis for bone remodeling in microgravity. Mature osteocytes undergo destruction, increasing empty lacunae, indicating significant bone tissue adaptation to spaceflight.

Background:

Bone tissue undergoes adaptive remodeling in response to altered mechanical loading.
Microgravity is a significant factor influencing bone metabolism and structure.
Understanding cellular mechanisms of bone adaptation is crucial for astronaut health.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the histological and morphometric changes in monkey iliac crest bone biopsies after spaceflight.
To elucidate the role of osteocytes in bone adaptation to microgravity.

Main Methods:

Electron microscopy was used to examine bone biosamples.
Histology and morphometry of iliac crest biopsies from monkeys aboard the "Bion-11" mission were analyzed.

Young osteocytes showed increased collagen protein biosynthesis, filling osteocyte lacunae with collagen fibrils.
This correlated with fibrotic osteoblast reorganization.
Mature osteocytes exhibited intensified osteolytic activity, leading to increased empty osteocytic lacunae.

Conclusions:

Osteocytes play a dual role in bone adaptation to microgravity: young cells promote matrix synthesis, while mature cells induce bone resorption.
These findings highlight the complex cellular responses of bone tissue to spaceflight conditions.
