Insights
Chronic heart failure (CHF) progression is linked to significant changes in heart muscle cells (cardiomyocytes). These changes include cell damage and structural alterations, but not necessarily increased cell death.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Cell Biology
- Pathology
Context:
- Investigates cellular changes in the right atrium auricula during chronic heart failure (CHF).
- Utilizes light and electron microscopy for detailed ultrastructural analysis.
- Examines myocardial tissue from patients across various stages of CHF.
Purpose:
- To characterize the morphological alterations in cardiomyocytes (CMC) and interstitial cells in relation to CHF progression.
- To determine if cardiomyocyte apoptosis correlates with the severity of chronic heart failure.
Summary:
- Significant cardiomyocyte heteromorphism, including hypertrophy and organelle changes, is observed and correlates with CHF advancement.
- Ultrastructural findings reveal sarcomere disorganization, myofibril fragmentation, and altered membrane systems (pinocytotic vesicles, caveolae, T-system tubules).
- Apoptosis of cardiomyocytes and interstitial cells occurs, but no significant correlation with CHF stage was found.
Impact:
- Provides detailed insights into the cellular pathology of chronic heart failure.
- Highlights the structural remodeling of cardiomyocytes as a key feature of CHF progression.
- Clarifies the role of apoptosis in the context of CHF severity.
Abstract:
Intraoperative biopsy specimens of the right atrium auricula from patients at different stages of chronic heart failure (CHF) were studied using the methods of light and electron microscopy. Marked heteromorphism of cardiomyocytes (CMC) was demonstrated which was found to be correlated to CHF progression. CMC showing the signs of hypertrophy and organelle hyperplasia, sarcomere discomplexation, myofibril fragmentation were identified, as well as CMC containing numerous pinocytotic vesicles, caveolae, distended T-system tubules. Apoptotic CMC and interstitial cells were also shown. No significant correlation between the myocardial cell apoptosis and CHF stage was established.
