Summary

Mycobacterium vaccae immunotherapy did not improve outcomes for tuberculosis patients. The treatment showed no effect on mortality or sputum negativity and caused local adverse reactions in most recipients.

Background:

  • A systematic literature search was conducted across multiple databases (Cochrane, MEDLINE, EMBASE) up to October 2002.
  • Included were randomized and quasi-randomized trials of whole, killed Mycobacterium vaccae in tuberculosis patients.
  • Data extraction and quality assessment were performed by a single reviewer.
