Pattern visual evoked potential (PVEP) evaluation in hypothyroidism.

Summary
Thyroid hormone deficiency can affect the central nervous system (CNS). This study found pattern-shift visual evoked potentials (PVEP) were largely normal in newly diagnosed hypothyroid patients, challenging previous findings.

- Pattern-shift VEP (PVEP) recordings were conducted on 48 hypothyroid patients (24 sub-clinical, 24 overt) and controls.

- Mean P100 latency in hypothyroid patients (97+/-6 ms) was not significantly different from controls (96+/-4 ms).

- This study did not confirm high rates of PVEP abnormalities in newly diagnosed hypothyroidism.
- PVEP abnormalities may be more pronounced in advanced or neurologically involved hypothyroidism cases.
