Summary

This study details a Golden Retriever with polyuria and polydipsia caused by cryptococcal pyelonephritis, a rare kidney infection. The cryptococcus infection also led to neurological issues, including megaesophagus and regurgitation.

Background:

A 5-year-old Golden Retriever presented with polyuria, polydipsia, and regurgitation.
Initial diagnostics for bacterial pyelonephritis and megaesophagus were inconclusive.

Observation:

The dog developed intention tremors and progressive neurological dysfunction.
Histological and immunohistochemical analysis at necropsy confirmed cryptococcal disease.

Findings:

Cryptococcal pyelonephritis was identified as the cause of nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, leading to polyuria and polydipsia.
Neurological signs, including megaesophagus and regurgitation, were linked to brainstem localization of Cryptococcus organisms.
