Background:

  • Terminal myelocystocele is a rare form of occult spinal dysraphism.
  • It involves a cystic dilatation of the terminal cord herniated through a lumbosacral spina bifida.

Observation:

  • Four cases of terminal myelocystocele were studied.
  • No preoperative neurological deficits were observed in these cases.
  • None of the cases were associated with OEIS complex (omphalocele, exstrophy of the bladder, imperforate anus, and spinal abnormality).
  • One cyst uniquely contained a significant amount of pus.

Findings:

  • All four cases underwent successful surgical repair.
  • The surgeries were uneventful for all patients.
  • No child experienced neurological deterioration during the follow-up period.

Implications:

  • Early surgical intervention for terminal myelocystocele can lead to favorable outcomes.
  • The absence of OEIS complex in these cases suggests variability in presentation.
  • Further research into the management of infected myelocystocele may be warranted.
