Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Oncology
  • Comparative Pathology

Background:

  • Osteosarcoma, typically a bone tumor, can rarely occur in extraskeletal sites.
  • Hepatic osteosarcoma is an exceptionally rare malignant neoplasm in domestic animals.

Observation:

  • A 13-year-old domestic shorthair cat presented with a palpable abdominal mass.
  • Radiography identified a radiopaque mass in the cranioventral abdomen.

Findings:

  • Histological examination confirmed the abdominal mass as a hepatic osteosarcoma.
  • Surgical resection (partial hepatectomy) and adjuvant carboplatin chemotherapy resulted in complete tumor remission.

Implications:

  • This case demonstrates the feasibility of surgical and chemotherapeutic intervention for feline hepatic osteosarcoma.
