Summary

This study found that 24-hour heart rate variability (HRV) differs between adolescent girls and boys, and between racial groups. These findings highlight the importance of considering sex and race when assessing cardiac autonomic function in youth.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Autonomic Nervous System Function
  • Adolescent Health

Background:

  • Cardiac autonomic function in adolescents is not well-studied.
  • Existing research on heart rate variability (HRV) norms often overlooks sex and racial differences.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of age, sex, race, BMI, and Tanner stage on cardiovascular autonomic tests and 24-hour HRV in healthy adolescents.
  • To establish normative values for short-term evoked and 24-hour HRV in this population.

Main Methods:

  • A descriptive, correlational study involving 75 healthy adolescents (mean age 15.0 years).
  • Evaluated Valsalva ratio, heart rate change with deep breathing, and 24-hour HRV using Holter monitoring and power spectral analysis.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Lower 24-hour HRV values were observed in adolescent girls and African American participants (P <.05).
  • Normative ranges with 95% confidence intervals were calculated for both short-term and 24-hour HRV measures.

Conclusions:

  • This study provides the largest dataset on adolescent HRV to date, emphasizing the need to account for sex and racial variations.
  • Advances in HRV monitoring enable early detection of subclinical cardiac autonomic changes in at-risk youth, such as those with diabetes or obesity.
