Area of Science:

  • Medical research
  • Infectious diseases
  • Critical care medicine

Background:

  • Tetanus presents a significant mortality risk, even within advanced Intensive Care Units (ICUs).
  • Understanding tetanus's clinical presentation and evolution in ICUs is crucial for improving patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the clinical characteristics and evolution of tetanus cases admitted to the ICU.
  • To identify key factors contributing to mortality in tetanus patients.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective descriptive study was conducted.
  • Data from 26 patients admitted to the Hospital Escuela ICU between 1995 and 2001 were analyzed.
  • The study examined clinico-epidemiological data and patient clinical evolution.

Main Results:

  • The study reviewed 26 tetanus cases, with 65.4% being male.
  • Common manifestations included trismus (88%), dysphagia (77%), and cervical rigidity (69%).
  • Cut wounds were the primary cause (54%), with complications like dysautonomia (73%) and pneumonia (42%) leading to a high mortality rate (69%).

Conclusions:

  • Despite advanced medical facilities, tetanus mortality remains high, primarily due to dysautonomia.
  • Prevention strategies are essential for effective tetanus control.
