Summary

Nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae strains can cause septic abortion. Ampicillin resistance is increasing, so susceptibility testing is crucial before treatment.

Observation:

  • A pregnant woman with embryonic demise developed sepsis.
  • Blood cultures isolated a nontypeable, ampicillin-resistant H. influenzae.

Findings:

  • Nontypeable H. influenzae strains show increased beta-lactamase activity.
  • Ampicillin resistance is a growing concern in these infections.

Implications:

  • Ampicillin should be used cautiously for H. influenzae infections.
  • Antimicrobial susceptibility testing is essential for guiding treatment decisions.
