Summary

A rare case of bilateral pleural effusion linked to prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) was observed. Discontinuing PGE1 rapidly resolved the effusion, highlighting its potential as an adverse effect.

Background:

  • Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) is used to maintain circulation after vascularization procedures.
  • Drug-induced pleural effusion is a known, albeit uncommon, adverse effect of various medications.

Observation:

  • A 75-year-old male developed bilateral pleural effusion and respiratory distress after receiving PGE1 for an amputated hand replacement surgery.
  • The patient's condition began on day 7 of PGE1 administration, with effusion noted on day 12.

Findings:

  • Discontinuation of PGE1 led to a rapid resolution of the bilateral pleural effusion.
  • Improving hypoalbuminemia also contributed to the resolution of the effusion.
