Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Pediatrics
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Epilepsy is a significant neurological disorder affecting children worldwide.
  • Identifying risk factors is crucial for prevention and early intervention strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between specific risk factors and epilepsy in children in Northern Jordan.
  • To determine the significance of febrile convulsions, head trauma, CNS infections, perinatal history, family history, and parental consanguinity.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study was conducted with 200 epileptic children (cases) and 200 controls.
  • Controls were matched for age and sex.
  • Data were collected through interviews and medical record reviews, followed by statistical analysis.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • A history of febrile convulsions, head trauma, abnormal perinatal history, and family history were significantly associated with increased epilepsy risk.
  • Central nervous system infections and parental consanguinity did not show a significant association with epilepsy in this population.

Conclusions:

  • Family history, head trauma, febrile convulsions, and abnormal perinatal history are key risk factors for childhood epilepsy in Northern Jordan.
  • Despite high rates of consanguinity in Jordan, it did not appear to increase epilepsy risk, likely due to the limited role of monogenic recessive epilepsies.
