Summary

Cryptomnesia, or unintentional plagiarism, was studied. Participants showed lower confidence in plagiarized memories but still reported certainty, indicating a gap between subjective experience and accuracy in memory recall.

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Memory Studies

Background:

  • Cryptomnesia, or unintentional plagiarism, is a common memory phenomenon.
  • Understanding its qualitative characteristics is crucial for distinguishing it from intentional deceit.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the qualitative characteristics of cryptomnesia.
  • To compare confidence levels and phenomenological differences between cryptomnesic and veridical recall.

Main Methods:

  • Experiment 1: Compared confidence in accurate vs. inaccurate source attributions.
  • Experiment 2: Adapted the Memory Characteristics Questionnaire to compare phenomenological differences in recall.

Main Results:

  • Plagiarized responses were associated with lower confidence than correct responses.
  • Despite lower confidence, many plagiarized responses were still rated with high certainty.
  • Correct recall featured more experiential detail than plagiarized recall.

Conclusions:

  • Cryptomnesia involves a complex interplay of confidence and memory characteristics.
  • Findings align with the source monitoring framework, suggesting difficulties in distinguishing internal thoughts from external information.
