Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) effectively treats progressive epithelial ingrowth after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) buttonholes. This single-step procedure clears corneal opacity and improves vision, preventing recurrence.

Background:

  • Laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) can lead to complications like epithelial ingrowth.
  • Progressive central epithelial ingrowth in LASIK buttonholes can impair visual function.

Observation:

  • Two patients with progressive central epithelial ingrowth and fibrosis post-LASIK were treated with PRK.
  • PRK was performed 6 months after the initial LASIK surgery.

Findings:

  • Photorefractive keratectomy successfully resolved epithelial ingrowth in both treated eyes.
  • Uncorrected visual acuity improved to 20/20, with no recurrence of epithelial ingrowth after 6 months.

Implications:

  • PRK is a viable treatment for central epithelial ingrowth after LASIK buttonholes.
