Summary

High-dose inhaled fluticasone for 28 days did not suppress delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) in healthy individuals. This study found no significant difference in DTH responses between the inhaled fluticasone and placebo groups.

Background:

  • Systemic steroids are linked to anergy.
  • High-dose inhaled steroids may have systemic effects, but their impact on delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) is not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if a 28-day course of high-dose inhaled fluticasone suppresses DTH in healthy subjects.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial involving 45 steroid-naïve healthy volunteers.
  • DTH was assessed using intradermal skin testing to a panel of antigens before, during, and after 28 days of high-dose inhaled fluticasone or placebo.
  • A 30-day washout period was included before the final DTH assessment.
