Summary

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Infectious Disease Epidemiology
  • Substance Abuse Research

Background:

  • Tuberculosis (TB) control relies on active case-finding in high-risk populations.
  • Correctional facilities are settings with potential for TB transmission.
  • Drug addiction is a known risk factor for TB.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the prevalence of tuberculosis among newly admitted, never-jailed drug addicts.
  • To identify risk factors associated with positive tuberculosis skin tests in this population.
  • To evaluate the most effective screening method for tuberculosis in drug addicts.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 319 never-jailed drug addicts was enrolled upon admission to a correctional centre in 1997.
  • Tuberculin skin tests were administered to assess exposure and infection.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Pulmonary tuberculosis cases were identified within the study sample.
  • Main Results:

    • Eight cases of pulmonary tuberculosis were detected, representing an incidence approximately 170 times higher than the general population.
    • Statistically significant differences in skin-test positivity were observed in males over 40, unemployed individuals, and injecting drug users.
    • These findings highlight the elevated risk of TB in this demographic.

    Conclusions:

    • Drug addicts admitted to correctional facilities represent a high-risk group for tuberculosis.
    • Mini-radiography is a more cost-effective and time-efficient screening method compared to the tuberculin skin test for this population upon admission.
    • Implementing efficient screening protocols is vital for community TB control.
