[Study on risk factors and molecular typing of Acinetobacter baummanii in nosocomial infections]
Objective:
To study the risk factors of Acinetobacter baummanii in nosocomial infections, and to verify the nature of Acinetobacter baumannii strains isolated from intensive care unit (ICU).
Methods:
A hundred and fourty patients associated with nosocomial infection of Acinetobacter baummanii from four teaching hospitals were selected and compared with controls through a case control study to identify risk factors. The strains isolated from the ICU were typed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with the primer M(13) following electrophoresis in agarose gel.
Results:
The odds ratios (ORs) were: state of the illness (OR = 8.69), using immunosuppressant (OR = 4.85), mechanical ventilation (OR = 3.68) and treatment with 3 kinds of antibiotics (OR = 3.014). Data from PCR studies indicated that these strains were sharing identical band pattern from the five strains.
Conclusion:
Risk factors for nosocomial infection with Acinetobacter baummanii included state of an illness, immunosuppressant, mechanical ventilation, and treatment with antibiotics. A multidrug-resistant strains of Acinetobacter baumannii was identified in ICU.
Insights
Severe illness, immunosuppression, mechanical ventilation, and antibiotic use are key risk factors for Acinetobacter baumannii nosocomial infections. Multidrug-resistant strains were identified in intensive care units (ICUs).
Area of Science:
- Infectious Diseases
- Critical Care Medicine
- Microbiology
Background:
- Nosocomial infections pose a significant threat in healthcare settings.
- Acinetobacter baumannii is a common cause of hospital-acquired infections, particularly in intensive care units (ICUs).
- Identifying risk factors and characterizing microbial strains are crucial for effective infection control.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the risk factors associated with Acinetobacter baumannii nosocomial infections.
- To characterize Acinetobacter baumannii strains isolated from ICU patients.
Main Methods:
- A case-control study involving 140 patients with Acinetobacter baumannii nosocomial infections and controls from four teaching hospitals.
- Risk factors were identified using odds ratios (ORs).
- Strains from ICU patients were analyzed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with M(13) primer and agarose gel electrophoresis.
Main Results:
- Significant risk factors included severe illness (OR = 8.69), immunosuppressant use (OR = 4.85), mechanical ventilation (OR = 3.68), and treatment with three antibiotic classes (OR = 3.014).
- PCR analysis revealed identical band patterns among five Acinetobacter baumannii strains, suggesting clonal relatedness.
- These findings indicate a common source or transmission of specific strains within the ICU.
Conclusions:
- State of illness, immunosuppression, mechanical ventilation, and antibiotic treatment are significant risk factors for Acinetobacter baumannii nosocomial infections.
- The study identified multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii strains circulating in the ICU.
- These findings highlight the need for targeted infection prevention strategies in high-risk patient populations.
