Summary

Tamoxifen shows promise in treating Riedel's thyroiditis, a rare condition causing thyroid gland hardening. This study suggests tamoxifen, combined with other therapies, significantly improved patient symptoms and reduced goiter size.

Background:

  • Riedel's thyroiditis is a rare, benign, fibrosing condition of the thyroid gland.
  • It often presents with compressive symptoms and can be mistaken for malignancy.
  • Current treatment options are limited and often ineffective.

Observation:

  • A 46-year-old woman with a history of Hashimoto's thyroiditis presented with progressive dyspnea, dysphagia, fatigue, and hoarseness.
  • Initial treatment with methylprednisolone was unsuccessful.
  • Tamoxifen, 10 mg twice daily, was initiated alongside methylprednisolone and L-thyroxine substitution therapy.

Findings:

  • Tamoxifen therapy led to significant subjective improvement and objective reduction in goiter size (105g to 63g) over 8 months.

  • Histopathology post-partial thyroidectomy confirmed Riedel's thyroiditis.
