This study corrected cubitus varus deformity in children using gradual medial opening wedge osteotomy with an external fixator. The technique proved effective, achieving good to excellent results in most cases with minimal complications.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Pediatric Orthopedics
  • Skeletal Deformity Correction

Background:

  • Cubitus varus deformity is a common condition in children.
  • Surgical correction is often necessary to restore function and aesthetics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of gradual medial opening wedge osteotomy using a simple external fixator-cum-distractor for correcting cubitus varus deformity in children.
  • To assess the functional and cosmetic outcomes and identify potential complications.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty children (ages 6-14) with cubitus varus deformity (17-43 degrees) underwent gradual medial opening wedge osteotomy.
  • Osteotomy was stabilized and distracted using a simple external fixator-cum-distractor.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Good to excellent results were achieved in 28 out of 30 cases regarding deformity correction and elbow range of motion.
  • No neurological deficits or permanent stiffness were reported. One case had fair results (under-correction), and one had poor results (premature union).
  • Superficial pin-site infections were the main complication, managed with proper care.

Conclusions:

  • Gradual medial opening wedge osteotomy with an external fixator-cum-distractor is an effective, simple, and cosmetically acceptable method for correcting pediatric cubitus varus.
  • The technique offers good functional and aesthetic outcomes with a low complication rate.
