    Summary

    This study found no significant excess of HL-A antigens in Behcet's disease patients. The B27 antigen association, if present, is much weaker than in related conditions like ankylosing spondylitis.

    Background:

    • Behcet's disease shares clinical features with B27-associated spondyloarthropathies.
    • The role of Human Leukocyte Antigen (HL-A) B27 in Behcet's disease is not well-established.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association of HL-A antigens, particularly B27, in patients with Behcet's disease.
    • To compare the HL-A antigen profile of Behcet's disease patients with those of spondyloarthropathies.

    Main Methods:

    • Complete HL-A typing was performed on 26 patients diagnosed with Behcet's disease.
    • Clinical data, including uveitis and spondylitis, were correlated with HL-A antigen presence.

    Main Results:

    • No specific HL-A antigen was found in significant excess among the Behcet's disease patients.
    • Only two patients (7.7%) tested positive for the B27 antigen; both had uveitis, but eight B27-negative patients also presented with uveitis.
    • Absence of ankylosing spondylitis and sacroiliitis was noted in all patients.

    Conclusions:

    • Behcet's disease appears to have a significantly weaker association with the B27 antigen compared to ankylosing spondylitis and Reiter's syndrome.
    • The findings suggest Behcet's disease is distinct from B27-associated spondyloarthropathies, despite some overlapping clinical symptoms like uveitis.
