Advocating for mental health services for children with depressive disorders

Depressive disorders can have far-reaching effects on functioning and future adjustment of children. Early identification and referral for treatment are crucial for the emotional well-being of the child and family (NIMH, 2000). Pediatric nurses/NPs are key players in assuring that children receive these services. Although the pediatric nurses and NPs have not always advocated for mental health services for children, it is important we take up this cause.
