Background:

Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEM) was introduced in 1983 for rectal adenoma removal.
Indications expanded to include curative excision of pT1 low-risk carcinomas and palliative treatment of higher-stage tumors.
Training courses for TEM have been conducted since 1985, with hundreds of surgeons trained globally.
