Main Results:

  • Over 150,000 patients have been treated with absorbable implants globally.
  • Polyglycolide (PGA) and polylactide (PLA), particularly polylevolactide (PLLA), are the primary materials used.
  • The market now offers a wider variety of biodegradable fixation devices.

Conclusions:

  • Absorbable internal fixation devices are a viable and increasingly adopted alternative to metallic implants.
  • The use of biodegradable materials like PGA and PLA simplifies fracture treatment by avoiding removal procedures.
  • Continued innovation is expanding the options for absorbable osteosynthesis devices.
