Summary

Multiple muscular anomalies of the sternocleidomastoid muscle were found in a single cadaver. These unilateral variations in the superficial and deep neck muscles are previously undescribed.

Area of Science:

  • Anatomy
  • Human Anatomy
  • Musculoskeletal System

Background:

  • Anatomical variations are crucial for understanding human musculoskeletal system development.
  • Routine dissection studies provide valuable insights into anatomical anomalies.

Observation:

  • Multiple muscular anomalies were identified in the right side of the neck in a 25-year-old male cadaver.
  • Variations were noted in both superficial and deep muscle layers.

Findings:

  • The superficial layer exhibited two muscles and a muscle bundle: sternocleidooccipital muscle (with clavicular and sternal heads) and sternomastoid muscle.
  • The deep layer contained the cleidomastoid muscle.
  • An additional muscular bundle was observed between the sternocleidooccipital and sternomastoid muscles.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This unique combination of unilateral neck muscle variations has not been previously reported in anatomical literature.
  • Such findings highlight the importance of detailed anatomical examination during dissections.
  • Understanding these anomalies can aid in surgical planning and interpretation of imaging studies.
