Summary

For suspected appendicitis, helical abdominopelvic CT scans are recommended as the initial imaging test for adults. Focused CT scans with colonic contrast are used for unclear results.

Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Appendicitis diagnosis relies heavily on radiologic imaging.
  • Computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound are common modalities for appendiceal imaging.
  • Debate persists regarding the optimal imaging technique for appendicitis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the most effective initial imaging modality for suspected acute appendicitis in adults.
  • To establish a protocol for utilizing CT in appendicitis evaluation.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of imaging studies for patients with suspected appendicitis.
  • Standard helical abdominopelvic CT as the primary imaging test.
  • Focused appendiceal CT with colonic contrast for problem-solving equivocal cases.

Main Results:

  • Helical abdominopelvic CT is effective for initial evaluation of suspected appendicitis.
  • Focused CT with colonic contrast aids in resolving ambiguous findings.

Conclusions:

  • Standard helical abdominopelvic CT is the preferred initial imaging modality for adult acute appendicitis.
  • A sequential approach using standard CT followed by focused CT is recommended for accurate diagnosis.
