Recurrent priapism in a boy was successfully treated with oral terbutaline (Bricanyl). The medication prevented further episodes of priapism during and after treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Urology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Priapism is a prolonged erection not related to sexual stimulation.
  • Recurrent priapism can cause significant distress and potential long-term complications in pediatric patients.

Observation:

  • A pediatric patient presented with recurrent episodes of priapism.
  • Previous treatment options may have been considered or ineffective.

Findings:

  • Oral administration of terbutaline (Bricanyl) was initiated for the management of recurrent priapism.
  • No recurrences of priapism were observed during the course of terbutaline treatment.
  • Priapism did not recur following the cessation of terbutaline therapy.

Implications:

  • Terbutaline represents a potential therapeutic option for managing recurrent priapism in boys.
