Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Nephrology
  • Renal Medicine
  • Clinical Research

Background:

  • Chronic renal failure (CRF) is a significant health concern in pediatric populations.
  • Understanding the clinical presentation and etiological factors of pediatric CRF is crucial for timely intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinical manifestations of chronic renal failure in children.
  • To identify the primary underlying causes of chronic renal failure in the studied pediatric cohort.

Main Methods:

  • A descriptive prospective study was conducted.
  • Data was collected from pediatric patients diagnosed with CRF between January 1993 and December 1996.
  • Two major pediatric healthcare centers in Pakistan were involved.

Main Results:

  • Seventy-eight children with CRF were analyzed, with a male predominance (M:F ratio 1.8:1).
  • Most children (90%) presented after the age of three.
  • Common symptoms included anemia (93.5%), growth retardation (74.3%), urinary complaints (65.3%), and hypertension (53.8%).
  • Key causes identified were reflux nephropathy (24.5%), posterior urethral valves (23%), chronic glomerulonephritis (15.4%), and urolithiasis (14%).

Conclusions:

  • Prompt diagnosis and management of prevalent causes of pediatric CRF are essential.
  • Intervention can potentially prevent or delay the advancement to end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
