Summary

This study presents a novel single-stage treatment for permanent post-traumatic patellar dislocation using total knee arthroplasty. The procedure showed a surprisingly good recovery, even after decades of living with the condition.

Background:

  • Permanent post-traumatic patellar dislocation is rare and often misdiagnosed as congenital dislocation.
  • Current treatment options are not well-defined, including observation, surgical realignment, or patellectomy.

Observation:

  • A unique case of long-standing patellar dislocation, present for nearly 40 years, leading to secondary osteoarthritis.
  • The patient maintained reasonable function despite the chronic dislocation.

Findings:

  • This is the first reported case of using conventional non-constrained total knee arthroplasty with patellar resurfacing and soft tissue realignment in a single stage for this condition.
  • The patient experienced a surprisingly good recovery following the total knee replacement.
